I repurposed this underutilized downstairs family room and part of the garage to add a full bathroom and efficient kitchenette that could be used as a guest suite or income-generating ADU.
The guiding inspiration was the idea of clean, Scandinavian materials with a minimal zen appearance.
A dated closed-off layout had the living room separated from the kitchen and dining room by a large fireplace and wall. This was not ideal for the family wanting to keep an eye on their young kids. The fireplace and wall were removed, the kitchen rearranged, the flooring replaced, and a new skylight installed, where the fireplace was, to bring in more natural light.
The client wanted more space to store cars and personal items. They also wanted to plan for the future and make sure the garage could be adapted into a future 2 bedroom in-law unit.
